Hello neighbors! As we wrap up 2025 and look toward the New Year, there is a lot happening right here in the "Township of Lakes." Whether you're commuting through the ongoing roadwork or getting the kids ready for winter sports, here is a quick breakdown of what’s going on around Byram.
🏛️ Town Government & Infrastructure
Route 206 Updates: Heads up for those heading north—the lane closures on Route 206 Northbound have been extended through January 1. The gas company is still finishing up work, so expect some delays if you're heading toward Newton.
Township Council: As we hit the end of the year, several council terms (including Mayor Rubenstein’s) are set to expire on December 31. Keep an eye out for the Reorganization Meeting in early January where the 2026 leadership and appointments will be finalized.
Help Wanted: The town is currently looking for a part-time Fire Protection Subcode Official. If you know someone licensed and looking for about 8 hours a week, point them toward the Township website.
❄️ Special Events & Community
Holiday Lights: Congrats to the winners of the 2025 Holiday House Decorating Contest! If you haven't taken a drive around town yet, this week is the perfect time to see the displays before they start coming down.
First Day Hikes: Looking to start your resolutions early? New Jersey State Parks (including our nearby Allamuchy and Hopatcong areas) are hosting First Day Hikes on January 1. It’s a great way to explore our local trails and celebrate the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary.
Library News: The Sussex County Library System just launched a free digital archive of historic local newspapers. It’s a treasure trove if you’re interested in Byram’s history or genealogy.
🏫 Schools & Education
Winter Break: Byram Township schools are currently closed for Winter Recess and will reopen on Thursday, January 2, 2026.
Board of Education: The Board met on December 17 to discuss new district goals focused on communication and operational efficiency. The next big date is the Reorganization Meeting on January 5.
Student Achievements: Huge shoutout to the students from our local schools who participated in the "Stuff the Stocking" toy drive—over 9,000 toys were collected across Sussex County this year!
🏀 Local Sports (Lenape Valley Patriots)
Winter sports are in full swing for our high schoolers:
Wrestling: The Boys Varsity team is competing in the Holiday Tournament at the Arbolino Gymnasium today (Dec 29).
Basketball: The Boys and Girls Varsity teams have been busy with holiday tournaments over at Hopatcong High. The Boys' game against Whippany Park was recently rescheduled, so check the latest Athletics calendar before heading out.
Ice Hockey: The Patriots have a big game against Mount Olive coming up on December 31 at Skylands Ice World at 8:15 PM—a great way to spend New Year's Eve!
Stay safe on the roads and have a wonderful New Year, neighbors!
